If downhill skiing is the favourite of most ski enthusiasts, some like to practice a discipline that is more confidential. This winter, we will more readily discover slopestyle which will become an Olympic discipline at the future games in Russia.
During your next mountain stay, you will have the opportunity discover numerous activities with ski in all its forms dominating your options. Alpine or downhill skiing, Nordic or cross-country skiing, snowboard, freeride or freestyle… the ways in which to enjoy yourself on the slopes are numerous. And the start of this new ski season will show a certain vogue for slopestyle with either a skiing or a snowboarding format and which has become an Olympic discipline : the champions of this sport will face off at the Sotchi Winter Games in 2014 in Russia.
Slopestyle consists of skiing or snowboarding down a course that is dotted with different obstacles such as rails, jumps for spins, grabs, grinds, and flips. The discipline seems to have its origins in street sports such as skateboarding or BMX. In competition, the contestant’s performance is judged on the amplitude of jumps, originality and the quality of the different tricks. Acrobatic skiers and riders around the world are rejoicing in the recognition of the sport as an Olympic Games discipline and one can only expect that the snowparks of the most important ski resorts will be particularly busy this winter. For those who wish to try out the sport or to improve their slopestyle performances, a certain number of snowparks will offer equipment and new material for the 2011-2012 season. Created four years ago, the Val Thorens snowpark is rapidly becoming one of the best spots in France and will notably host the European Slopestyle Cup. At the 2 Alpes snowpark, slopestyle offers 3 table tops (17 meters for the big kicks and 12 meters for the smaller), a set of 3 boxes and a handrail, a hip and two quarters with rails and an S-rail at the exit. In Tignes, from March 14 to March 16, 2012, the 3rd Edition of the Winter X Games Europe will take place with a men and women’s Slopestyle competition on skis and snowboards. This winter, you’ll no longer an excuse for not knowing slopestyle!
