How to choose ski gloves

How to choose ski gloves

It is important to choose ski gloves well because heat loss is most important in the extremities. The hands are severely tested during snow sports: they are subjected to the cold on the chairs or at the end of the day, or the heat of the noonday sun. The fingers’ fragile skin can dry out and become chapped, joints become numb. But with a good pair of gloves it is possible to protect one’s hands and be comfortable at all times.

Choice of the shape and size of the glove

To protect the hands, it is possible to choose mittens or ski gloves. If gloves are more practical, mittens are recommended if you are very sensitive to the cold. In fact, the mitten shape leaves the thumb free to move but the other fingers are well insulated. It is also possible to wear gloves with liners for additional warmth.

As for the size of ski gloves, it is often recommended to choose them sufficiently large as to remove them easily even in case of perspiration. The exception would be leather gloves which have the tendency to stretch. The chart below will guide you in finding the glove size you need. The measurement indicated is the size of the palm measured around from the index to the little finger as shown in the diagram:

Choice of the glove material

When you go to buy your ski gloves you will have to choose between different types of products: warm gloves, warm and waterproof gloves, liners (to wear in addition to ski gloves for additional warmth).

If warmth if essential when skiing, it is also important to protect against uncomfortable humidity that can come from the outside (snow) or from the inside (perspiration). Opting for gloves that are waterproof and breathable solves this problem: shells such as Gore-Tex, Dermizax, Even, or Windstopper are wind-breakers and waterproof while allowing moisture to wick away. The preference for keeping your hands warm on the slopes!
