In the mountains, safety is of the utmost importance : in Chamonix, the association « La Chamoniarde » wants to raise skiers’ awareness of necessary caution to have on the slopes by organizing a snow and safety evening on Wednesday, February 2012.
A mythical ski resort, Chamonix rises up in the heart of the Mont Blanc valley, and invites skiers to take advantage of a vista made up of rocks, snow and ice, with numerous exceptional scenic views. Chamonix’s development is linked to tourism and the city has slowly expanded under the influence of different architectural movements. Its heritage is thus rich and varied, and invites the visitor to stroll and to discover its churches and Protestant chapels dating back several centuries, its palaces from the “Belle Epoque” period, its Art Deco facades, its quiet farms, its colossal villas, its chalets or its modern buildings. As to the resort’s ski area, it is decidedly modern: divided into three sections, Les Grands Montets, Vrévent/Flégère and the Balme area, it offers a host of slopes and trails for all levels on very different sites. Thus, all will find enjoyment on the area’s slopes, the lovers of steep descents, or skiing through the forest, from beginners to experienced skiers. To make their ski hire needs easier, a Skimium partner store is located in Chamonix.
Because safety is essential in the mountains, on Wednesday, February 22, 2012, mountain experts mobilised to raise skiers’ awareness of the eventual risks and the means to avoid them. “La Chamoniarde”, an association for prevention and mountain rescue based in Chamonix, organized a prevention event to raise the awareness of vacationers to the risk of avalanche. Slope groomers, dog handlers, firemen were present but also the gendarmerie platoon specialized in high mountain rescues (le Peloton de Gendarmerie du Secours en Haute Montagne), the national police center for training in mountain climbing and skiing (Centre National d’Entraînement à l’Alpinisme et au Ski des CRS), the French weather bureau (Météo France), … There were demonstrations and workshops, and the possibility to converse with professionals around hot drinks and a contest : numerous gifts were won to include a Gore-tex ski vest, a pair of skis and an outing with a mountain guide. Many were present in Chamonix to learn more about the behaviours to adopt or to avoid in the mountains for the safety of all.
